Summary
Role Summary
To assist in VALR’s regulatory compliance and implementation requirements, to serve as in-house regulatory compliance counsel for VALR globally, and to guide VALR’s internal stakeholders on regulatory updates and requirements - reporting to the Chief Legal Officer.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain an effective compliance program, including preparing and finalising policies, procedures, and training materials, to ensure that VALR's business operations comply with all relevant laws and regulations within the VALR Group.
- Establish, document and continuously monitor the VALR Group’s compliance risk universe.
- Develop, record and manage Compliance Risk Management Plans (CRMP's) for the VALR Group.
- Identify, evaluate and test the adequacy and effectiveness of compliance controls.
- Develop the compliance monitoring plan and execute compliance monitoring reviews within defined timeframes.
- Prepare and present regular reports to the Chief Legal Officer and the VALR Board on the compliance health and status of the VALR Group.
- Monitor, analyse and interpret proposed regulatory changes, participate in public consultation processes, solicit and collate feedback from various departments, and compile comments for submission on behalf of the VALR Group during the public consultation process.
- Conduct impact and gap analysis on any proposed legislative or regulatory changes.
- Provide advice on proposed legislation and regulation and how it may affect the business operations, both local and international.
- Internal and external stakeholder engagements at an operational and Board level including liaising with regulatory authorities.
- Develop and maintain relationships with regulatory authorities and stay abreast of changes in the regulatory environment and best practices.
- Collaborate and liaise with various leadership and departmental heads, including Legal, Compliance, Finance, Business Development, Security, Marketing and Operations, to ensure that compliance requirements are in line with regulatory requirements and integrated into business operations to ensure full compliance with all local and global legislation and regulation that relate to the VALR Group.
- Manage compliance-related projects, statutory and regulatory filings, and ensure that all projects are completed in a timely and accurate manner.
- Have a demonstrable and working knowledge of applicable current legislation.
- Continuously evaluate and improve the compliance program to ensure that it remains effective and relevant for the VALR Group.
- Stay up to date with the evolving cryptocurrency regulatory landscape and engage with regulators as a thought leader to influence the thinking on and the implementation of new legislation within the industry.
- Custodian of VALR Group policies and procedures and facilitating the creation, modification, update, implementation and periodic review of all policies.
- Provide guidance and training to employees on compliance requirements and policies, and ensure that all employees understand their compliance responsibilities.
- Encourage and maintain a positive and collaborative compliance culture.
Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in legal, regulatory compliance, or general compliance roles, with a strong preference for experience within a financial institution or cryptocurrency service provider.
- A law degree is required. A recognised compliance certification or qualification will be highly regarded.
- A strong interest in the cryptocurrency and fintech sectors is essential. Previous experience in the cryptocurrency space is advantageous but not mandatory.
- Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities, with a practical and results-oriented approach.
- Ability to operate autonomously while delivering high-quality outcomes.
- Strong project management skills with the ability to handle multiple compliance initiatives simultaneously.
- Ability to handle complex regulatory issues and potential compliance crises with a proactive and solution-driven approach.
- Capacity for foresight, identifying emerging regulatory trends and risks.
- Ability to effectively negotiate and engage with regulatory authorities and internal stakeholders.
- Willingness to engage in both strategic initiatives and detailed operational tasks, ensuring a hands-on approach where needed.
- Proven experience managing compliance and regulatory functions at a group level.
- Ability to lead and coach teams, fostering discussions around compliance and regulatory matters across the Group.
