Introduction

The SQL Essentials Training is a beginner-level, self-paced course ideal for individuals with no background knowledge and experience in databases but who want to acquire SQL skills to enhance career opportunities in web development, programming, and data analysis. The course features videos, review exercises, assignments, and projects that participants can complete at their own convenience to reinforce learning. By the time this course reaches its conclusion, the students will have gained expertise in SQL and Microsoft’s SQL Server Management Studio.

What Will You Gain from This Course

Upon completion of the SQL Essentials Training course, participants will:

  1. Become acquainted with the concept of a relational database management system (RDMS) that stores data in tabular form.
  2. Learn about the three normalization techniques used to reduce data dependency.
  3. Learn to use data definition language (DDL) SQL statements to create and alter tables in databases.
  4. Understand how to use data manipulation language (DML), which includes a set of SQL commands, to add/modify/remove/combine the data stored in tables.
  5. Develop a firm understanding of retrieving, restricting, sorting, and displaying data from multiple tables using SQL commands.

Skills Acquired

  1. Data Manipulation
  2. Table Joins
  3. Aggregate Functions
  4. Index Management
  5. Query Optimization

Who Is This Course For

This course is designed for:

  1. Beginners with no prior experience in handling large databases.
  2. Individuals who are interested in pursuing careers in data analytics and IT, and need to build relevant skills acumen.
  3. Software developers who want to leverage SQL in building applications that allow smooth interactions with databases.
  4. People looking to apply for the role of data administrator will benefit from learning SQL as it will help them effectively manage data in organizational databases.

Course Outline

5 Modules – Certificate of Completion

DDL (Data Definitions Language) Commands

This is the first module of the course. It introduces students to relational database management systems (RDMS) and the common normalization techniques used to minimize the redundancy of data in tables. Furthermore, they will learn to use data definition language (DDL) commands to create tables and delete/alter database objects.

The module also features hands-on practice sessions where students are encouraged to apply the learned concepts. They will be asked to enter a set of commands to create a table with predefined columns, add a new column to an existing table, and check the constraints on a table. Moreover, they will learn how to add the primary key and foreign key to the table and remove the unique constraint.

DML (Data Manipulation Language) Commands

The second module is based on DML commands and how they are used to effectively manage data. In a stepwise manner, students will first learn how to insert data in tables using insert statements and subsequently update/modify existing data by applying update statements. Similarly, delete statements are used to delete data from a table. They will also learn how operators are used to retrieve data from databases. This module will familiarize them with additional statements, including select and truncate. They will learn about SQL wildcard and CASE expression. At the end of the module, through a hands-on/demo session, they will learn to insert records in a table, delete specific records, and update data in a table.

Retrieve Data from Multiple Tables

The main objective of this module is to teach students how to retrieve data from other tables and insert it into another. This involves the use of joins. Students will learn how different types of joins are used to combine rows from two or more tables. These include self-join, inner join, left-join, right-join and cross-join. Finally, students will learn how to retrieve data from multiple tables through a hands-on/demo session.

Inbuilt Functions in SQL

Now that students have learned how to manage and retrieve data in large databases, the fourth module will cover more advanced concepts, like using SQL’s built-in functions to calculate values and perform data manipulation. Students will learn about various types of built-in functions in SQL, including conversion, logical, math, aggregate, string, and data functions. They will taught how to use certain commands.

This module also features a hands-on/demo/use-case session. It focuses on teaching students by practical demonstration. Students will learn to determine the count of rows that satisfy a certain condition. They will also learn to calculate the average and sum of data in a column.

Create Advance Database Objects

The final module strives to teach students how to create advanced database objects that can be used for data manipulation and retrieval. This module covers much ground, from teaching students how to create and execute stored procedures and create custom functions and triggers.

The course will conclude with a hands-on/demo/use-case session. Here, students will either perform or learn through a practical demonstration how to create advanced database objects, like creating functions, triggers, procedures, and executing stored procedures.

Description

The SQL Essentials Training course will teach its participants everything about SQL from scratch. Using Microsoft's SQL Server Management Studio, participants will learn to write SQL and use it to manage, retrieve, sort, filter, and group data in SQL Server databases. They will also learn to calculate and aggregate data using SQL’s built-in functions and commands.

It is important to note that SQL is a common language that can be adapted to other relational database management systems, including MySQL, IBM DB2, Oracle, and Sybase. Hence, the skills learned in this course will help participants manipulate and manage data on other RDMS as well. Moreover, having proficiency in SQL can propel career opportunities for participants in IT.
